Making Math Content Accessible to ELLs

HELP engages students through interactive multimedia lessons that break down math terms and concepts, so that students can easily understand and retain the math content.

  • Vocabulary: Key concept vocabulary explained using home-language support
  • Instruction: Vocabulary taught interactively in the context of a math lesson
  • Try It!: Bite-size standardized assessment–type math questions
  • Real-World Scenario or Game: Vocabulary and math key concepts applied in a fun and interesting way
  • Test-Taking Skills: Student learns to read and comprehend look-alike state high-stakes assessment questions with interactivity and feedback loops
  • Final Quiz: Short assessment to determine student proficiency (teacher and student have access to the graded quiz and reports)

Proven Effective: 79 standards-aligned, interactive lessons for Elementary and Middle School (more than 200 hours of instruction)

  • An independent pilot evaluation of HELP Math using a randomized pre-post, two-group (treatment, comparison) design shows Spanish-speaking and other ELL students using HELP in Grades 6–12 improved their standards-aligned test scores by 50%.
  • HELP Math demonstrated gains of more than 70% for sixth- and seventh-graders.
